Epstein Barr virus IgG is a blood test. This test is to help diagnose infectious mononucleosis (mono); to distinguish between an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and another illness with similar symptoms; to help evaluate susceptibility to EBV. This test is conducted when you have symptoms of mono but a negative mono test; when a pregnant woman has flu-like symptoms; occasionally when an asymptomatic person has been exposed to someone with mono; or possibly as a means to check immune system function

Doctor may order this test if you show any of the signs and symptoms of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) like fever, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headache, fatigue, stiff neck, spleen enlargement.

The presence of VCA IgG antibodies indicates that an EBV infection has occurred at some time recently or in the past.
