Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by normal, as well as malignant, cells of the prostate gland. The PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man’s blood.
Prostate cancer is common, and a frequent cause of cancer death. The PSA test is only one tool used to screen for early signs of prostate cancer.
The normal PSA serum concentration remains a debate, however, for most laboratory readings, it should be less than 4.0 ng/mL.
