This is an immunoassay test method that detects specific proteins in blood or tissue. It combines an electrophoresis step with a step that transfers (blots) the separated proteins onto a membrane. Western blot is often used as a follow-up test to confirm the presence of an antibody and to help diagnose a condition. An example of its use includes Lyme disease testing.
A positive HIV DUO (Elisa) screening test will not necessarily indicate an HIV infection. A positive ELISA test is always backed by a Western blot test. A positive Western blot confirms infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) either in saliva, urine or serum. Morever few other conditions such as Lyme disease, syphilis, and lupus may lead to a false positive result.
