Scrotal ultrasound is an imaging test that looks at the scrotum. It is the flesh-covered sac that hangs between the legs at the base of the penis and contains the testicles.

The testicles are the male reproductive organs that produce sperm and the hormone testosterone. They are located in the scrotum, along with other small organs, blood vessels, and a small tube called the vas deferens.

If there are abnormal findings on your testicular ultrasound, they may indicate:

1) an infection in your testicle
2) a benign cyst
3) a testicular torsion, which is a twisted spermatic cord restricting blood flow to your testicle
4) a testicular tumor
5) a hydrocele, which is a benign collection of fluid around your testicle
6) a spermatocele, which is a fluid-filled cyst on the ducts of your testicle
7) a varicocele, which is an enlarged vein in the spermatic cord of your testicle
