Aldolase is an enzyme found in muscle tissue that is active in breaking down sugars for energy. Blood tests that find elevated levels of aldolase can indicate inflammatory disease of the skeletal muscles, and may warrant further testing.
Because aldolase levels are elevated in the bloodstream when a person has muscle damage, the aldolase blood test may be ordered to diagnose and monitor certain conditions related to skeletal muscle.
In general, normal results range from 1.0 to 7.5 units per liter.
