  • Lose extra weight: If you’re overweight, diabetes prevention may hinge on weight loss. Every pound you lose can improve your health.
  • Quit Smoking: Smokers are significantly more likely to have diabetes. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, smokers are 50 percent more likely to develop type 2 diabetes than are people who don’t smoke. The more a person smokes, the higher their risk.
  • Avoid Excess Alcohol Intake: According to the Harvard School of Public Health, consuming excess alcohol increases diabetes risk. However, moderate alcohol consumption in people who already drink alcohol may have protective effects against diabetes. If you do not currently drink alcohol, you don’t have to start. A healthy lifestyle is an effective way of reducing diabetes risk.
  • Skip fad diets and just make healthier choices: Low-carb diets, the glycemic index diet or other fad diets may help you lose weight at first. But their effectiveness at preventing diabetes isn’t known, nor are their long-term effects. And by excluding or strictly limiting a particular food group, you may be giving up essential nutrients. Instead, make variety and portion control part of your healthy-eating plan.
