The Pink ribbon is the international symbol of breast cancer awareness! But, how many of us are actually aware about breast cancer?
Why does everyone cringe when it comes to talking openly about breast cancer?
There are many questions which target breast cancer awareness in the country as well as around the world. In a patriarchal society like ours, where feminist issues do not surface as priorities has led to low awareness about this disease. Breast cancer is one such disease which can be detected in preliminary stages but due to suppression in society, the word ‘breast cancer’ fails to be talked about. This stigma surrounding this disease has increased the need of awareness about it with open talks, breast cancer campaigns and societal support to patients.
“According to research conducted by WHO in the year 2012, the number of cases of breast cancer in women in India were estimated at around 1, 45,000. The mortality rate calculated was around 50 percent as opposed to the 30 percent rate globally. This report clearly indicates the consequences of the lack of awareness about breast cancer in India.”
