Serum total protein, also known as total protein, is a biochemical test for measuring the total amount of protein in serum. Protein in the serum is made up of albumin and globulin.
Doctor orders this as a routine checkup to screen the level of nutrition, to diagnose liver, or to detect any infection.
The normal serum protein level is 6 to 8 g/dl. Albumin makes up 3.5 to 5.0 g/dl, and the remainder is the total globulins. These values may vary according to the individual laboratory.
