Serum Erythropoetin is a blood test to diagnose the cause of anemia; to help diagnose a bone marrow disorder or a condition causing the production of too many red blood cells (polycythemia or erythrocytosis). This test is done when you have anemia that your healthcare practitioner suspects may be caused by decreased red blood cell production; when you are producing too many red blood cells.
Erythropoietin test is performed to detect bone marrow disorders, (such as polycythemia, or increased red blood cell production) kidney disease, or erythropoietin abuse.
Normal levels of erythropoietin range from 4 up to 24 mU/ml (milliunits per milliliter).
