Bronchial washing is part of a procedure called a bronchoscopy, in which a physician looks into the lungs with a fiber-optic bronchoscope to check for irregularities and take tissue samples.
It may be a valuable investigation in situations where biopsy procedure cannot be attempted due to high risk of haemorrhage.
This test includes processing saline introduced into the lung at bronchoscopy in order to investigate for deep seated pathogens, viruses and fungi.
